Love

Amour, Dragoste, Cinta, Armastus, L'amour, Ast

It's spring time and that means love is in the air, time for weddings, and baby showers. All around the world love is shared and expressed in different ways.

Here are just a few that I found interesting!

Courting:

* In parts of Ireland it is commonly believed that if a woman eats a four-leaf clover while thinking of about a man, he will fall in love with her.

* Lupercalia a Roman festival, women wear their lovers name pinned to her sleeve.

* During the 19th century in Austria single women would dance with apple slices rucked in their armpits. They would then offer the apple slices to a man of her choosing. He would eat the "treat" if he wanted to be exposed to her "sexual fragrance"

* In Iran it is against the law to date.

* In Norway women wear a sheath on her belt when she is ready for marriage. When a man chooses her for marriage, he would place a knife in her sheath.

* "Love Huts" are a common thing for unmarried teen girls. They are encouraged to have multiple sexual partners, it is believed this gives the girls empowerment, independence, and will help them find true love.

* The men in the Taiwanese Aboriginal Tribe would practice headhunting and offer their prize to win the heart of an Aboriginal women.

* A tribe in Papua New Guinea the men paint their bodies and wear colorful feathered costumes to impress a potential lover.

Valentine's Day:

* In France unmarried men and women would enter two houses facing each other and would begin calling to one another, to pair off.

* Women in France use to burn images of their ungrateful lovers. The French government passed a decree banning this custom.

* Korea celebrates Valentine's Day on the 14th of EVERY month. They include days for single people, days to hug, and days of forgiveness.

Marriage/Relationship Types:

*Levirte: When a husband passes, his brother then marries his widow.

Elephant Love

*Sororate: When a wife passes, her sister marries her widow.

*Polygny: Where a man has more than one wife.

*Polyandry: A wife has more than one husband.

* Arranged Marriage: Where a third party arranges a marriage between a couple based on "practical" reasons and not based on love.

*This one I found no name for, but in some countries it is legal to marry a person of the opposite sex, even after death.

Wedding Traditions:

*Spartan's believed that a person's physical ability should match their marriage, that being said the bride and groom to be would wrestle in public to show their compatibility.

*Scotland believed that throwing disgusting items (i.e. fish, rotten eggs, trash, ect.) at the couple to be could better prepare them for marriage

*Fillipino culture both the bride and groom are to wear white. It is also a bad omen for the bride to try on her dress before the wedding day, and to wear pearls.

*The Yugur cultures in China the groom would shoot his bride 3 times with a headless arrow. After which he would break the arrows to show he will love her forever.

*In Congo wedding the bride and groom are forbidden to smile. That includes the reception and all wedding photos.
